The Essential Guide on How to Care for Your Eco-friendly Apparel

So you got yourself a dope new t-shirt or hoodie and it happens to be “eco-friendly"...are you expected to baby this thing and wash it in Champagne?
Not quite. Though you will want to keep a few things in mind to preserve that ultra vibrant look of your new apparel, and enjoy its fit to the max.

We’ll cut to the chase: It’s jarring that In our home country of Canada, the average person throws out 81 pounds of textiles annually, while North Americans send 10 million tonnes of clothing to the landfill every year—most of which could be reused or recycled.

Now imagine the worldwide impact?

To help mitigate the impact on our environment, brands like ours commit to eco-conscious practices at the core of our operations. That means, the material we use needs to be sustainable, biodegradable and carcinogen-free; or recycled.  When you purchase eco-friendly, sustainably made clothing, you’re helping lessen the blow on Mother Earth - go, you!

Browse our catalogue of eco-friendly choices here.

Today, we will arm you with essential insights on how to care for your new eco-friendly garments so you can enjoy them to their fullest, while keeping the environmentally-friendly cycle going.

  1. Space out the frequency of washing if you can. While the clothes in our catalogue can tolerate regular washing, quadrupling the life of just one laundry basket’s worth of clothes can save the planet over 500lbs (230 kg) of CO2 – the same impact, emissions-wise, as driving 600 miles. This will also prolong the vibrancy of your apparel for even longer!

  2. Launder your clothes in cold water. About 90% of the energy used by the washing machine during laundry goes towards... you guessed it...heating the water! Now don’t worry, our tees and hoodies can definitely withstand hot washes (trust us, we tested it by accident); even so, we feel it’s ideal to wash them in cooler temps. This will  a) reduce our collective carbon footprint, and b) keep your bad ass new threads looking fresh for as long as possible!

  3. Try to find an eco-friendly detergent option that works well in cold water. The beauty of our highly connected world is that finding any type of product easier than ever. If you're having trouble finding an eco-friendly detergent, a relatively good detergent from the "big guys" is Tide PurClean. One less blow to the environment, and a lavish yet effective wash for your clothing!

  4. Use natural fabric softener. Color preservation will make your clothing last longer, and the longer they last, the less textile waste is out there hurting our environment. Fabric softeners (like Downy Nature Blends) can help extend the life of fabrics in a nature-friendly way.

  5. Shake it out! We highly recommend shaking your t-shirts, hoodies and tanks out when you take them out of the washing machine (because... it’s fun?) For real though, this will help prevent wrinkles in the natural material of your eco-friendly clothing. Once you’ve had your fun with the shaking, hang them on a rack, line or over a chair/door to air dry.
Why not just toss them in the dryer? You could as our clothes wouldn’t be affected much if you did. In the spirit of being as kind as possible to both your new clothes, and the eco-system, we feel air-drying is the best option. By air-drying your garments, you’re further reducing the impact of mass energy expenditure and giving the clothes you just scored a chance to dry naturally. Win, win.

Remember, part of the warrior mindset is respect. Respect for others, ourselves, our possessions, and our environment.

When you invest in eco-friendly clothing, you're investing in quality and longevity. That means you get to enjoy your clothes for longer, and help reduce the amount of textiles hitting the landfill every year. When you care for them the right way, well, you do the math!
